Why a card game?

Thanks to work from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, we know that  72% of Americans know global warming is happening and 65% are worried about it, yet only 35% of Americans discuss climate change even just occasionally. People are disengaged, paralyzed, and afraid, both of climate change and of talking about climate change. Our aim is to provide opportunities to give voice to those who seek heart-forward approaches to climate action, especially those who are craving the space to share and connect with others on an emotional level about the climate crisis, without worrying about the technical aspects of climate change that can feel isolating to some. Our card game facilitates heart-opening connections between people of all backgrounds and comfort levels.

How does the card game work?

This game aims to create conversations, having participants work through their own relationships with climate change while envisioning a climate resilient future. Working with a partner, participants pick one card from each of the four conversation levels:
  • Level 1 is inviting icebreakers – getting to know people in a low-stakes way.
  • Level 2 is jumping right into our feelings and thoughts about climate change – what are we scared of, what do we wish we knew, what have we been thinking about up to this point?
  • Level 3 is imaging into the future – where do we want to go? What hopes and dreams do we have for our future selves, our children, our communities?
  • Level 4 is meta-reflection – how has this conversation made us feel? What are we taking away from this conversation?
Players take turns responding and listening to the prompts, forming a connection along the way. The card game is available in both Spanish and English for a diversity of players.

Use the links below to download the decks for free. We have four different decks: standard English (for adults), K-12 English, standard Spanish, and K-12 Spanish. All four decks have three different download options: print-at-home pdf, png zip files to send to print shops, and virtual decks for remote play.
